Remedial Applications

Overview

Ashepoo siteEnviroBlend® has been used for many years by industrial facilities to manage their process waste streams. Originally developed to offer an alternative to problematic lime treatments in foundries, EnviroBlend has now grown to be the premier treatment chemistry in many of the large melting facilities in the United States. EnviroBlend personnel are continuing to expand our client base with the development with new products and applications.

Especially in today's regulatory environment — a facility can not risk problems with ineffective and inconsistent treatment. EnviroBlend understands this issue and assists facilities to determine the best chemistry. Premier Chemicals offers many types of EnviroBlend and clients are assured they are using the correct reagent and lowest-cost solution.

EnviroBlend® is represented in the foundry industry by the following distribution partners:

Performance Examples

Ferrous Foundries

Many ductile and gray iron foundries utilize EnviroBlend® in their waste generation process for low-cost and consistent treatment before the baghouse. For example:

  • A large ductile iron pipe manufacturer is currently treating over 200 tons per month of cadmium and zinc-contaminated baghouse dust using one of our standard EnviroBlend treatment blends. They are applying EnviroBlend through injection into their ductwork before the baghouse.
  • After using one of EnviroBlend’s standard treatment blends for over 5 years, a large ferrous foundry is one of the many that we service that have recently switched to our newly supplied low-cost EnviroBlend CS product for cadmium stabilization.

Secondary Aluminum Smelters

  • A specialty EnviroBlend chemistry was developed for a secondary aluminum smelter to treat cadmium as well as SO2 emissions. For over 8 years, they have been using EnviroBlend to treat roughly 180 tons of baghouse dust per month.
  • Another large secondary aluminum smelter is currently using EnviroBlend for heavy metal concerns in baghouse dust, specifically meeting TCLP standards for lead and cadmium. Prior to contacting EnviroBlend personnel, the facility had been attempting to neutralize furnace emissions for acid gas (in this case, SO2) but was not addressing the heavy metals issues. As a result, they were required to dispose of their waste as hazardous. We were able to streamline the facility’s process by tailoring a single unique blend that stabilized metals as well as treated their SO2 emissions all within the ductwork of their system.

Brass and Aluminum Foundries

  • A non-ferrous foundry is treating lead contaminated waste with an EnviroBlend product at two different locations within their facility. Waste molding sand and dust is treated with the first system and dust collector fines on their shot blast machine is treated with the second system.

Steel Alloy Manufacturer

  • A southern steel alloy manufacturer has two induction melters that share a common baghouse, as well as three electric arc furnaces each with a separate baghouse. EnviroBlend is being used for treatment of lead and cadmium in each.

Application

EnviroBlend® chemicals are mixed with a process stream to stabilize heavy metals, generally before a hazardous waste is generated. The process is typically exempt from RCRA permitting, and the resulting material can be disposed at a non-hazardous waste landfill. In addition, new innovative blends have been developed that combine reagents to simultaneously treat metals, acid gases and dioxins/furans.

Dry Baghouses:
For dry wastes (e.g. emission control dusts), EnviroBlend chemicals are added as a dry powder. The optimum method is to inject the EnviroBlend into the ductwork prior to the baghouse, preventing the generation of a hazardous waste, as defined in RCRA regulations.
Tanks:
Where treatment prior to the point of generation is not logistically possible, EnviroBlend may be used to treat wastes in tanks or containers.
Wet Systems:
For wet scrubbers, EnviroBlend chemicals are added to the clarifier or at another convenient point prior to the filter or sludge dewatering unit. The pre-point-of-generation approach is typically exempt from RCRA regulations.

Advantages

Premier’s unique advantage of having its own raw materials mine and manufacturing facilities helps us to control the quality of our products, increasing effectiveness and keeping costs to a minimum.

Significantly Lower Cost than Alternatives on a Total Cost Basis

The EnviroBlend® team will work with you and your facility to find out which product is not only the most efficient, but the most economical. We have a large line of EnviroBlend products, ranging from extremely reactive blends to low-cost alternatives; all of which are made up of high quality products manufactured for the single purpose of metal-stabilization. We do not believe in using by-products, as they can be unpredictable in their chemistry.

In-line Treatment for Non-Hazardous Disposal

EnviroBlend can be delivered to your site in packaging (in 2,000 lb supersacks and/or in 50 lb. bags) or delivered in bulk (in bulk dump trailers and/or pneumatic trucks). We can give you guidance regarding the best way to incorporate in-line treatment into your system. Our typical blends consist of non-hazardous materials that do not require excessive health and safety equipment, alleviating concerns with protection against breathing hazards, high pH products or other harmful characteristics.

Reduce Your Liabilities

The stability of EnviroBlend-treated waste reduces the liability associated with environmental impacts to soil and groundwater. The EnviroBlend-treated materials do not leach in either the environment or regulatory tests.   Project-specific blends limit long-term liability since chemistries are designed to address the unique conditions of each project.

The resulting material meets the Toxicity Characteristic (TC) levels or the Universal Treatment Standards (UTS) under the TCLP. EnviroBlend® provides long-term stability for a total treatment solution, not just for satisfying regulatory tests.

Technical Support [ click here to learn more ]

The EnviroBlend team consists of experienced chemistry, process and construction experts who deliver in-depth services, including:

Treatability Studies:
In-house, bench-scale laboratory services provide facility-specific chemical blends and ongoing treatment verification.
Regulatory Support:
EnviroBlend has been applied to hundreds of waste streams since the late 1980s. We can help you gain approval of an EnviroBlend approach for your site, if required.
Ongoing Research:
Changes in raw materials (scrap, etc.) or changes in the process can affect the levels of the hazardous metals in the waste. If this situation arises after a blend and dosage rate are established, we will do follow-up testing to redesign a blend for your new waste characteristics.
