Summary
- Finding the treatment that is right for you:
- EnviroBlend® is not a single product; rather it is a line of high-quality metal-stabilizing treatment chemistries that have been developed over time. The original patented EnviroBlend chemistry was a buffered phosphate that was used to not only bind with the metals of concern, but also to stabilize the pH of the environment to ensure long-term treatment.
- Controlling the environment for long term stabilization:
- For most heavy metals, regulating the pH of the environment is key to controlling leachability. For example, lead leaches on a bell curve, at both high and low pHs. So in order to minimize leaching, the treatment additive should not drive up the pH too quickly or too high. EnviroBlend uses products that will never bring the pH to a dangerous level. We are able to increase treatment efficiency by controlling pH accordingly. In addition, phosphates and other additive chemicals will bind to the metals in question, forming compounds that have extremely low solubilities and making the treatment essentially permanent.
- A step beyond pH adjustment:
- The traditional EnviroBlend, a buffered phosphate, is so much more than simple pH adjustment. In treating lead, for instance, the phosphate binds with the lead and the magnesia buffer keeps the pH where lead is stable. This two-phase approach has proven effective and proven to be a low-cost solution to hundreds of wastes. As we have been approached with new metals issues, we have expanded our treatment capabilities by developing a wide variety of specialized blends to meet project specific needs. There are some metals, for example, such as hexavalent chromium or arsenic, where phosphates and pH adjustment will not suffice and an entirely different chemistry is required. The different products under the EnviroBlend name allows clients to come to a single provider for solutions to a wide range of metals concerns.
- What to expect after treatment:
- The EnviroBlend-treated materials do not leach in either the regulatory tests and more importantly into the environment over time. The resulting material meets the Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure (TCLP) levels and the Universal Treatment Standards (UTS) using a variety of leach tests designed to simulate leaching in various disposal settings. However, EnviroBlend provides long-term stability for a total treatment solution, not just for satisfying regulatory tests.
